Karen James Chopra,
The Career Counselor's
Career Counselor

The business and practice of career counseling is my passion.

My private practice in Washington D.C. is usually so busy that my biggest challenge is finding counselors to refer to. I work the schedule that I choose and take six weeks off every year. I understand the fears and anxieties that accompany private practice. I also know that it is possible to get beyond them.

I've worked with hundreds of clients, written numerous articles and delivered many presentations on private practice issues. I inaugurated the online career column for the Washington Post, and have been a frequent guest on a local radio show about on career issues.

My book, Coaching Career Clients on Salary and Other Workplace Negotiations is the first in a planned series of guides for career professionals. It is available in hardcopy or as an e-book. To order, click here.

To provide counselors the tools to work with their most challenging clients, I developed the Integrative Career Counseling (ICC) model and provide training to help others adopt the model in their work. For more information and to sign up for upcoming trainings, click here.

My career started in the U.S. Government, where I worked on trade issues, first for the Department of Commerce, and then for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, where I worked on Latin American issues. After more than ten years as a civil servant, I realized that I desperately needed to make a change. I worked with a career counselor, and decided to go back to school and obtain a masters degree in community counseling. I decided to focus on career counseling, and haven't looked back.

As a working mom, I know the importance of keeping boundaries on work. I want my son to see me loving what I do, and being energized, not drained, by working.
